Tuesday 23rd July 2024 - Reporting, Stealing and Rockstock

In my 11th July blog, I said about reporting the two dog bins with missing lids to NNDC, via their website submission form.  They’re still missing!  I have now found a phone number which I called this morning and took me directly through to Serco, who deal with refuse matters and cover broken or damaged bins, in this area.  Very helpful, they have taken details and will send someone out to take a look.  I have a reference number to quote, should I need to contact them again about this issue.  Still on the subject of bins, over the weekend, the one on the corner of the zigzag path down to the beach has filled, with rubbish by the side.  This morning, even more rubbish has been left at the side of the bin (see photo).  I have used NNDC’s submission form to report this and maybe they will be more responsive than they were to the dog bin lids, clearing the rubbish and emptying the bin.  It’s worth mentioning, during busy times this bin is frequently missed, for whatever reason, by the rubbish collectors.

Before I say more, I need to stress, I am referring to visitors where the minority spoil the reputation of the majority.  Yesterday, a car pulled up outside a nearby home, a young woman got out and picked a flower from their garden.  Undoubtedly a visitor to the village, I approached before they picked more and told them, I am sure if they went and asked the householder, they would let her pick some of their flowers.  She got quite uppity about this, so I told her she was stealing.  ‘Only a flower’ was her response before dropping it.  Yes, you can argue, ‘only a flower’ and maybe because I was so annoyed at her cheek, implying she was a thief was a bit strong. BUT why did she think she had the right to take without asking.  This is not the only case we have heard of village visitors taking from a garden.

Going back now to Saturday and Rockstock.  Looking at photographs from the event, this was a great success with many enjoying, either sitting and listening or dancing to the music.  The sound level was lower (not just our observation) this year and therefore not that intrusive (not that we have a problem with one afternoon and evening of loud music).  I hope a good profit was made for the Sports Club who have a number of expenses to cover, especially costly maintenance and, from time-to-time, renewal of the thatched roof of the Pavilion.
