Thursday 9th December 2021 - On the Move and Table Decorations
Hardly surprising, considering the amount of rain which has fallen recently, that the cliff where the Overstrand Hotel originally stood, is on the move again. A great gloopy mass is now making its way down the road towards the sea and the barriers have been extended to allow for the recent slippage extending further across the road. It is going to make it difficult, if not impossible, for Serco to empty the bin at the bottom of the slope or for emergency vehicles to access the beach – thank goodness it’s not high season when the bin needs emptying every day and there are numbers of tourists about.
Our WI group met again on Wednesday. As always, it was a very relaxed get together where we made festive table decorations, after which we enjoyed mulled wine and mince pies. Members are pretty well resigned that the group will close next March. Due to various factors, over the past twelve months or so, our numbers have been dwindling, so much so that we will not be financially viable when the next WI year starts in April. Because of Covid, when initially we were not able to meet, there has not been an opportunity to invite potential new members to meetings or have an open day. Overstrand WI has always been pretty laid back with no pressure to get involved with county or national WI events; we have simply enjoyed each other’s company. The WI has something of a reputation for ‘Jam and Jerusalem’ and being behind the times. This and not being into crafts, which the WI promotes, put me off joining, that was until we came to live in Overstrand when over the garden fence, I met two members out on a litter pick who suggested I give it a try – the rest is history. Still, as they say, all good things come to end.
