Thursday 17th October 2024 - When is a Scone not a Scone? and Impatience
After mentioning, in my last blog, about having scone ingredients in my head, I thought I would, have a go and get baking. The ingredients were based on the recipe for Dorset apple cake which is basically a scone mix with added apples. As recommended, I didn’t roll out but used my hands to flatten and used a different cutter which I floured, plus I cut out the scones at two different thickness. Scones in the oven, I went off to do something else, popping back after five minutes when; all looked well. However, a later check left me with a Victor Meldrew, ‘I Don’t Believe It’ moment. The mix, I couldn’t possibly refer to them now as scones, had spread and as you can see from the photo what I now had on the baking tray was large cookies. As it turns out the cookies are nice, though a little on the large size. So, the answer to the question posed in the title of this blog – ‘When is a Scone not a Scone’ is, ‘When it’s a Cookie’. At the moment, I am not sure whether to give up on my quest for the recipe for the perfect scone, after all I do have quite a good number of other cake etc. recipes that are successful and without the frustrations I am experiencing with scones!
There has been some sort of Anglian Water issue with the new build (bungalow knocked down and new detached house under construction) on the Cromer Road, which resulted in an emergency road closure on Tuesday afternoon. Signage was erected to this effect but despite this, as we were walking the pavement on this stretch of the road, we saw drivers were still going along, only to have to turn around. Vehicles had a choice of roads to get around the closure, depending on direction of approach, either Carr Lane, High Street, Harbord Road, Pauls Lane or a mix of these. These roads all require a slower speed than on the main road and a bit of courtesy is needed to pass at very narrow points. Instead, some drove too fast and tried to push their way through the tight sections; generally being inpatient. What they thought they were gaining, goodness only knows. It’s sad or even pathetic that people feel they need to drive in such an inconsiderate way.
I can’t finish today’s blog without mentioning the weather. The past two days have been summer revisited, with temperatures in the high teens centigrade. The warmth and sunshine have been commented on by many and it was just perfect for me this morning, as I walked round the village delivering trays of poppies and collecting tins for the Poppy Appeal.
