Sunday 4th August 2024 - Sports Field, Guided Walks and Village History
My latest vlog, as mentioned in my last blog, is now posted on YouTube. It starts with me sat in our garden, filming myself with the camcorder held in my hand, at arm’s length. It would have benefited from the camcorder being a bit further away – it really shows my wrinkles! I won’t say any more, instead I’ll leave you to take a look at my vlog titled – Overstrand Sports Field.
In my vlog, I mention Tim Bennett’s guided walks in the village. He has now published the dates for his walks in August and September. I have included the poster as today’s photo, this is also on the Village Calendar page as well as Overstrand Life’s Facebook page. Some months ago, I was contacted by a gentleman wanting to know if there would be guided walks this year. Once July’s dates were published, I sent him the information and last Wednesday he travelled up from London by train, accompanied by his bike and on reaching Cromer, cycled to Overstrand to join Tim and others interested in the village’s history. He was particularly keen to find our more about, the now disused railway in the village which Tim covers in his walk. Travelling such a distance has to be testimony to how interesting and informative, Tim’s walks are.
Still on the subject of the village’s history. There has been research conducted by villagers into the past, plus there are residents who have memorabilia. In some ways, it would be a good idea if this was all brought together, collated and kept under one roof. However, there would always be the risk e.g. a fire, that everything could be lost, so maybe it’s best kept as it is. We have recently been talking with a villager who, like Tim Bennett, is engaged in finding out more about Overstrand’s past. He has kindly given us a list of previous occupants and owners of some of the properties in the village, going back to 1860. It’s interesting to see, most were tenants and very few owned their homes, nowadays it’s the other way round.
